BackgroundWe needed very small PCs to bid on a client's in-store audio project, but everything we saw was either too costly or invited theft.
Choosing an EnclosureOur first thought was to use obsolete laptops. Unfortunately, much of the target marketplace was retail establishments staffed by people paid less than magnificent wages. "Obsolete" is relative, and there is no economic way to lock down what looks exactly like a laptop worth stealing. We searched the net and Ebay® for compact PC systems, and instead found FlexATX cases. The cases were originally for IBM® NetVista® FlexATX systems, and were being surplused out due to end of production at very reasonable prices. They were small enough to suit the application. and, with no keyboard, mouse or monitor, would not invite theft or tampering. Having bought the cases, we foolishly expected to be able to buy motherboards that would fit in them. (This was mistake number one, the cause of all the following fracas.) This is the story ... and, for us at least, there was no happy ending. Others have fared better.
